Applications for the 22nd edition of the Prémio Bial de Medicina Clínica 2026 will open on January 1, 2026, but the regulations have already been made available, allowing applicants to begin preparing their submissions.
In this year’s edition, the jury is chaired by renowned rheumatologist and professor Jaime Branco. “We’re announcing the new edition several months in advance because we understand that preparing the work requires considerable dedication. Even those who have already developed research need time to organise the work to be submitted. I experienced this myself when I applied for the Award in 2008 and 2016, so the jury recommends that potential candidates consult the regulations, now available on the Bial Foundation website, and start preparing their applications early”, emphasises Jaime Branco.
Promoted by the Bial Foundation, the Prémio Bial de Medicina Clínica has a global amount of €120,000 and aims to recognise an original intellectual work of a medical nature, with an associated clinical research component and a free theme, representing work with high-quality and relevant results. At least one of the authors must be a native physician of a Portuguese-speaking country. The winning work will be published in a first edition, either in print and/or digital format.
Since its establishment, the Prémio Bial de Medicina Clínica has considered 720 entries from 1,853 researchers, doctors, and scientists. In 21 editions, it has distinguished 111 works by 316 authors, with more than 326,000 copies of 44 award-winning works published and distributed free of charge to health professionals. “The Prémio Bial de Medicina Clínica represents, above all, a long-standing commitment to scientific excellence. This award seeks to promote medical research with real impact on people’s health”, says Luís Portela, Chairman of the Bial Foundation.
In addition to Jaime Branco, the jury includes Miguel Castelo-Branco (Faculty of Health Sciences – U. Beira Interior), Helena Cortez-Pinto (Faculty of Medicine – U. Lisboa), Henrique Cyrne Carvalho (Abel Salazar School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences - U. Porto), Ricardo Fontes de Carvalho (Faculty of Medicine – U. Porto), Cristina Nogueira-Silva (School of Medicine – U. Minho), Roberto Palma dos Reis (Faculty of Medical Sciences | Nova Medical School – U. Nova de Lisboa), Isabel Palmeirim (Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences – U. Algarve), and Isabel Santana (Faculty of Medicine – U. Coimbra).
